Domain Name Extensions

In the early days of the domain names, there were just a handful of dissimilar domain name extensions to select from. But due to the rapid functioning and impact of the domain name, several types of domain name extensions are now used and applied, thus the once handful selection of the domain name extensions are now a handful of handfuls domain name extensions.

Definition

The domain name extensions are basically a top-level domain names such as .com, .org, .net, and others. This is considered to be a top most part of the domain names under which all of the domains are registered. For particular emphasis, domain name extensions such as the .com is designed for the commercial organizations; the .net are intended for network services such as ISPs and the .org is for non-profit organizations. These mentioned domain name extensions belong on the international front and these domain name extensions are the common in such field.

Country-By-Country Basis Extensions

In terms of a country by country basis, the common domain name extensions are based on the two-character ISO country codes and this is for the main reason that many countries offered these kinds of domain name extensions. Among such kind of domain name extensions is the .fr for France, .jp for Japan, and so on and so forth.

The Big 3

For much emphasis, there are actually so many types of domain name extensions today and due to the emergence of those domain names and alternatives, the picture became more and more complicated. To mention but a few, one of those types of domain name extensions is the Big 3 that is composed of .com, .net, and .org. They are known as the "Big 3" for the reason that these domain name extensions are accessible to anyone, without restrictions, and are widely known throughout the cosmos.

Country-Level Top Domains

The second type of the top-level domain names are the Country-level top domains. It is noted that these types are generally under government control, with the purpose of adding level of toughness and stability that a third party might find tough to level. Then next in line are also known as the Country-level top domains that are masquerading as something else. They are only international by agreement, thus they are just there by contract.

Alternative Top-Level Domains

Finally here come the alternative top-level domain names which include the .aero, .biz, .coop, .info, .museum, .name, and .pro. These top-level domain names are just recently created by the ICANN and these are considered as the seven new international domain name extensions. The creation of these types of top-level domain names and alternatives is primarily under the purpose of helping the people in finding the right domain names.
